Neath Rugby Supporters Club Hall of Fame

1984 TeamNeath Rugby Supporters Club are today proud to launch our Hall of Fame.  The Hall of Fame will recognise and honour individuals synonymous with Neath RFC  – the legendary figures who have shown exceptional commitment and contribution to the club.

Starting this year, Neath Rugby Supporters Club will induct three new members into the Hall of Fame.  The inductees could be players, coaches, administrators or any individual from any era who has shown a remarkable loyalty and commitment to Wales’ oldest rugby club.

So who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame?  Well, that is where you come in.

Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be asking supporters to nominate any individual who you feel will be worthy of inclusion in the Hall of Fame.  They can be a player, a coach, an administrator or volunteer.  Basically, any person who has made a significant contribution to the Neath RFC.

We’ll then form a small panel of Neath Rugby Supporters Club members, who will whittle all the nominations down to a final three.  These three will then be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a special celebration evening at the end of the season.

There’ll be no shortage of candidates spread across the decades.  The likes of Rees Stephens, Courtney Meredith, Dai Morris Brian Thomas, Brian Williams, Gareth Llewellyn or maybe Adam Jones are all likely to feature in people’s thinking, but anyone who has made an outstanding contribution to Neath RFC can be nominated.

How to nominate
You can make your nomination in a number of ways:

In person – Visit our table in the clubhouse on match days and fill in the nomination form.

You can nominate as many individuals as you like and closing date for nominations is Monday 24 March

Shortlisting
Once all the nominations are in, we’ll ask four or five Neath Rugby Supporters Club members to get together to discuss the nominations and whittle them down to the final three.  These three will then become the first members of the Hall of Fame.

If you’d like to help in whittling down the nominees then please e-mail us on info@neathrugbysupporters.com .  We’ll be doing this on Saturday 29 March, after our final home match of the season against Cross Keys.

Hall of Fame Evening
The final three individuals will be officially inducted into Neath Rugby Supporters Club’s Hall of Fame at a special celebration evening at the end of the season.  The evening will also incorporate the supporters club’s Player of the Year awards.  It is envisaged that the evening will take place in May (exact date to be confirmed)

So get nominating now to honour your heroes.

Cross Keys in the Cup

Apparently the club won’t be producing a programme for the Cross Keys game on Saturday, so here for your reading pleasure is the article that would have appeared on the Supporters Club page had there been one.  Enjoy!

Ballboys in their new bibs

Ballboys in their new bibs

Well it wasn’t too bad a Christmas after all. Two wins from two games and things are looking up after the tough start to the season.  Whilst the league table looks a little better today, there is still much work to be done and more games to be won before we can all breathe a sigh of relief.   And whilst today’s cup game will obviously have no bearing on where we finish in the league, it is vital in terms building our confidence and keeping the Christmas momentum going.

Meanwhile the Neath Rugby Supporters Club would like to thank its members who have been busy purchasing our polo shirts, hoodies, mugs and other merchandise in the run up to Christmas.  With the money we made on these items, we were able to donate a set of bibs to the ball boys before the Aberavon game on Boxing Day.  The donation is the second one the supporters club have made this season, following on from the nutritional supplements we supplied to the players back in September.   Even though Christmas has gone, the merchandise is still available for order for members.

Even though we’ve made two donations our fundraising continues.  We hope to reveal details of our next event very soon, so keep an eye on our website for details www.neathrugbysupporters.com .

Don’t forget, that as members you are always welcome to make any suggestions as to how we can raise funds and help the team.  Feel free to contact us at info@neathrugbysupporters.com , on Twitter @neathsupporters or simply come and see us in the clubhouse before and after home games.

Neath Rugby Supporters Club Make Donation to Club’s Ball Boys

Ballboys in their new bibsNeath Rugby Supporters Club has made its latest donation. The club’s ball boys were presented with new tabards to wear at games prior to Neath’s Prinicipality Premiership match with Aberavon on Boxing Day.

The supporters club was formed last summer with the intention of raising funds to buy equipment and kit for the Neath rugby squad and its support team. It forms the club’s second donation after previously presenting the squad with nutritional supplements earlier in the season.

A spokesman for Neath Rugby Supporters Club said “It is thanks to the generosity of our members that we have been able to make this donation to the ball boys. The money used to buy the tabards has come as a result of the merchandise, such as polo shirts and hoodies that we’ve been selling over the last couple of months”

The spokesman continued “We know how important it is having a group of committed and hard-working volunteers such as the ball boys and their co-ordinator, Andrew Ford at the club. We think it is important that when they go on the pitch to perform their duties they look smart and professional as they are representing the club and for this reason we were only too pleased to help them out.”

Ballboy co-ordinator Andrew Ford said “We are extremely grateful to Neath Rugby Supporters Club and their members for this donation. The boys are extremely hard working and are thrilled by the support they have received from the club’s fans.”

Match Report – Neath 24 – Aberavon 14

BLACKS BREAK THE WIZARDS SPELL WITH SHOW OF STEEL

Two tries in a three minute spell from two Neath players at either end of the career scale gave Neath an invaluable win and a four point gap in the league standings.

Gareth Gravell and Jordan Collier both crossed the whitewash in quick succession, with Avon a man light – losing captain Ian Moore to the bin for  successive infringements – just after the hour, to give the battling Blacks a ten point lead that they would never relinquish.

But the game was always in the balance until that point, as disappointing defence from the home team let the Wizards in twice at the start of each half.

From the kick off, Neath failed to deal with the ball, it appeared back on the visitors side. From the resulting ruck, Avon recycled and drove towards the far corner at the Tonna end, resulting in Nathan Brown crashing over.  Jamie Davies added the extras for a 7-0 lead.

Things remained tight for the next half hour, with Neath’s Scrum getting more and more on top, but puzzlingly referee Rhys Thomas giving Avon a couple of penalties, despite the visitors front row coming up and going backwards with apparant ease.

Both Jamie Davies and Dai Langdon missed kickable penalties in this period – 3-1 Davies led Langdon – but Neath got on the board on 32 minutes following good handling from the home backs.

Good strength from centres Pinches and Luke Williams led to Daf Howells being put into an inch of space near half way and the young Osprey impressively sliding over near the sticks. Langdon improved on the try to tie the scores at half time.

Straight after the break, Neath again failed to deal with the kick off and Avon Lock Gavin Ronan found himself in space. He evaded several tacklers before crashing over the line, Davies again adding the extras, but Langdon replying for a 10-14 advantage to the visitors.

Then two important incidents changed the course of the game. Firstly, the normally reliable Jamie Davies missed one penalty and hit the post with a second attempt, which Avon supporters know he would normally bury.

From the rebound Avon conceded a penalty, and virtually straight away skipper Ian Moore transgressed again. Referee Thomas had seen enough and gave Moore ten minutes in the cooler.

It was from the resulting penalty that Neath moved upfield and a good drive resulted in Jordan Collier being worked over and the Blacks took the lead for the first time. Langdon landed the extras to put the home team 17-14 up.

Neath were now in the ascendancy and were rewarded for yet more dominance up front, with recently returning ex-skipper Gareth Gravell being driven over on the far side, and Langdon slamming over the two pointer to put Neath 24-14 up.

The last 15 was all about if Neath could nick a four-try Bonus Point, but good, dogged defence from Avon saw to it that the revitalised Blacks got just the four points.

With Relegation looming for the bottom team in the WPL, this win will give the oldest club in Wales confidence going into a tough 2014, with a Cup run and hopefully a run clear of the relegation zone high on the list of priorities.

Match Report – Neath 18 – 11 Bridgend

RESOLUTE BLACKS HOLD FIRM AS BRIDGEND FAIL TO BREACH

NEATH finally got a W on the board after outstanding defence during the last quarter, plus ten minutes of injury time.

Their first win of the Premiership season came at the tenth time of asking, as they battled back from a half-time deficit to defeat the battling Ravens, and in doing so, they lifted themselves off the foot of the table, to be replaced by Swansea. The rejuvenated Blacks are now just a spot behind Aberavon, albeit on points difference — and they face each other at The Gnoll on Boxing Day. Both Clubs have two games in hand on Bridgend.

The Home Club’s win was the perfect welcome back to the ground for coach Patrick Horgan, who left the club in the summer but is now working together with Neil Edwards in a bid to change the playing fortunes.

Despite playing into a strong wind, Neath went in front on 7 minutes when No. 8 Lee Evans sent wing Alec Jenkins over the line, following some slick handling from the home team.

With the wind at their backs, the visitors gradually began to get on top and took a narrow lead thanks to the boot of Ross Jones, who landed a drop-goal and a penalty, giving the Brewery Field Club a slender 5-6 advantage at the turn around.

After the break lead changed hands early in the second period, with Neath fly-half Dai Langdon kicking a penalty on 42 minutes, before Bridgend went back in front thanks to a try by scrum-half Chris Williams. The conversion was missed, but the lead proved to be short-lived.

Neath went in front again when, after a storming break, including runs from Newbridge product Aaron Pinches and Jenkins on the left wing, Centre Luke Williams crossed at the posts, on debut, for a try that Langdon converted.

The fly-half added another crucial penalty — the last score of the game – And not even a late yellow card to Josh Davies, coupled with the length of injury time that left everyone scratching their heads, could derail the Blacks as they held off surge after surge of Ravens attacks, and a knock on by Jamie Murphy, who ironically used to play with the South Wales Scorpions at The Gnoll, signaled the end of proceedings.

Neath now face a tough task against their old bitter rivals of Aberavon, and will hope to build on the positivity of Saturday.

Big Game Against Bridgend

Aaron Bramwell

Aaron Bramwell

This Saturday marks the first of two huge games for Neath coming up over the festive period.  They could be considered amongst the biggest and most important in the club’s history.

Supporters will need no reminding that we are adrift at the bottom of the table with no wins yet this season.  If we win today and in the Boxing Day game against Aberavon then we’ll be right back in contention to stay up. Loose and….well, loosing doesn’t bare thinking about.

It’s not been an easy season for Neath, with defeats on the field and well documented issues off it.  Two things are certain though – the commitment of the players is unquestionable and the support of the fans is unwavering.  Both will be vital over the next two games and throughout the rest of the season.

Of course, this past week has seen changes to our coaching team. Therefore, it would be remiss of us at this point not to thank our departing coaches Robin Sowden Taylor and Llyr Lane. Despite results not going our way, they’ve put in a lot of hard work and we wish them well in their futures. Also, welcome back to Patrick Horgan. Let’s hope he can bring back some of the legendary Neath fighting spirit and never say die attitude he displayed as a player and in his previous stints as coach.

Supporters club members have been busy ordering items of merchandise from us over the last couple of weeks.  Polo shirts, hoodies, mugs and much more have all proved popular.  If you have ordered them, then please call to see us in the clubhouse after the game to collect your goods.

Enjoy the game

Back to the Rugby

HoodieAfter what feels like an eternity and after weeks dominated by off-field issues it’s finally back to the Gnoll for our first home game since October 5th.

Of course our last scheduled home game against Pontypridd was rightly postponed following the death of Stuart Williams.  However, that aside, having such a big gap in fixtures following on from a run 5 home games to start the season cannot be a good for anyone.  Why can’t we have a balanced season with home and away fixtures on alternate weeks?

Despite the inactivity on the pitch the supporters club having been busy off it, expanding our range of merchandise.  We now have available for order mugs, keyrings, pens, coasters, umbrellas, hoodies and beanie hats as well as our popular polo shirts. Take a look at at the items and prices here. Items can be ordered from our table in the clubhouse at Friday’s game and you will receive your items in time for Christmas.  The perfect gift for Neath fanatics this festive season.

Remember that all the profits made by the supporters club from the sale of these items are ploughed back into the squad for help with purchasing kit and equipment.

I hope you enjoy the game and hopefully we can finally register our first win.

Supporters Meeting – Thursday 21 November

Neath Rugby Supporters ClubFollowing a story that appeared in Saturday’s Western Mail regarding a letter sent by some fans to Neath MP Peter Hain concerning the future of Neath RFC, a supporters meeting has now been called.

Some supporters have asked Neath RFC rugby secretary Mike Price to invite Geraint Hawkes, Mike Cuddy and Neath RFC General Manager Nicola Woodfine to the meeting.

The meeting will be held this Thursday, 21 November at the Dark Arch pub in Neath at 7:00pm.

Please note that this is NOT a Neath Rugby Supporters Club organised event and is therefore open to ALL supporters and not just our members.  We have however agreed to help publicise the meeting to ensure that as many fans as possible are able to attend.

Neath Rugby Supporters Club will attempt to remain neutral in this matter and will await any outcome before commenting further on the situation.
