Neath v Pontypridd – Postponed

Neath Rugby Supporters ClubConfirmation has come today that our game at home to Pontypridd on Saturday has been postponed.  The postponement comes as a result of the sudden death of Pontypridd prop Stuart Williams, who died on Monday.

Stuart Williams had played for Pontypridd in every season of the new semi-professional era.  A feat matched by few other players.  Tragically, he was also a cousin of Gareth Snid Jones, who Neath fans will need no reminding also died in tragic circumstances 5 years ago.  He leaves behind a wife and two young children.

You can read Pontypridd’s tribute to him here.

It goes without saying that the sympathies of everyone at Neath Rugby Supporters Club are with Stuart’s family, friends and team mates.

Match Report – Llandovery 34 – 31 Neath

Daydd Howells, Neath, Wales, RugbyA referees interpretation when the scores tied at 31-31, cost Neath a first win over the Drovers in three attempts as replacement Lee Evans confidently stepped up and sent the ball straight between the posts from 35 metres to win the game. But the talking point was referee Neil Perkins’ opinion that Nicky Downs was a ‘lazy runner’ rather than making it just back in the defensive line in time.

Going into the match, Neath were in the unusual position of propping up the Premiership, having played four consecutive league games at home and lost them all, unluckily so in narrow defeats to Bedwas and Cardiff, while Llandovery had felt disappointed to only draw with Pontypridd last week, when victory was within their grasp.

Overall Llandovery’s support play and willingness to attack from all areas of the field constantly stretched the Neath defence – Wyn Jones had a storming game at prop, with captain Phil Day a constant menace in attack and defence – but Neath never gave in with constant threats from new Wales cap Dafydd Howells and Centre-cum-place kicker Adam Jones showing continued form in open play and with the boot.

Full-back Lee Rees and fly-half James Garland both used the strong first-half wind to good effect, constantly putting the ball behind the Blacks defence and Tom Ball scored the first Llandovery try after a drive from the line-out, but Neath came flying back, and soon responded with a try from scrum-half Josh Davies, converted by Adam Jones.

Shaun Miles, who had a fine all-round game, touched down for two tries in the space of five minutes – the first of these tries involved a bullocking run from 25 metres out, the second was from another catch and drive in the line-out. Both were converted by Garland to give Llandovery a 19-7 interval lead.
The Blacks, however, showed they weren’t out of it when Adam Jones scored a try and converted it, to keep them in touch at 19-14, before winger Sam Soul scored in the corner and stretched the lead again for the Drover-men after yet another catch and drive in the line-out.

Dafydd Howells on the wing always looked strong and elusive. He marked his return with two tries either side of a good individual try from Garland for the Drovers, to bring the scores level at 31-31.

With full time already showing on the clock, Evans proved Llandovery’s hero, but there was still time for one final twist when Neath were awarded a penalty wide out, but still in Adam Jones’s range.

Unfortunately the kick drifted wide and Llandovery had secured their third consecutive win over Neath, but the signs are very encouraging for the Blacks when Pontypridd come calling a week on Saturday in front of the S4C cameras.

Match Report: Neath 26 – 28 Cardiff

BLACKS FALL AGONISINGLY SHORT, AS THE CAPITAL CLUB ESCAPE WITH THE SPOILS
(Match report by Phill Lawrence)

Dai Langdon & Ceri Young

Dai Langdon & Ceri Young

Neath showed their faithful supporters that they still have character and held out the hope of better things to come during this slender loss to Cardiff at The Gnoll.
Though this represented a fifth straight home defeat for the Blacks in league and cup, a key decision went against them. After referee Wayne Davies whistled for half-time, Cardiff were awarded a penalty – touch judge Gareth Butler seizing on midfield obstruction, which talented 18-year-old fly-half Jack Maynard, who switched from Carmarthen Quins during the summer, landed the kick to increase their interval lead to a sweet 16 points at 7-23

But the Blacks, who have faded badly on several occasions recently, came on strong during the final quarter, and ultimately were unfortunate to only collect two losing bonus points, as opposed to a draw. “This was easily our best performance of the season and although confidence remains low, the tide will turn if we continue to work hard,” said Neath head coach Neil Edwards.

The game was won and lost inside the first 10 minutes when Cardiff recorded two tries to go 14 points clear. Despite the hint of a knock on, centre Richard Smith went on to capitalise on a series of errors to record a try against his former club, which was improved on by Maynard, and flanker Ben Roach then touched down close to the flag, Maynard again splitting the sticks.

The young Fly-half then delivered a 28th-minute penalty to put the Capital club 17-points to the good, before the Blacks broke their duck on 34 minutes, with Lock Jack Jones coming off a beautiful driving maul – which Grandad Brian Thomas would have been proud of – to touchdown, Langdon converting. A Maynard drop-goal, added to the contentious key penalty, made it 23-7 at the break.

The Blacks needed to respond quickly after the turnaround – and got it when Canadian Scrum half Phil Mack, who was a constant threat and excellent hands from Ospreys centre Tom Isaacs set up a try for former Cardiff Met captain and flanker Kyle Tayler.

But, in a pun-filled paradise, the chips were down for Neath once Dan Fish swam against the tide, and broke some disappointing defence to get the third Cardiff try – and a 28-14 lead.

This served to get Neath’s battling qualities finally going, and they ripped the Cardiff defence to shreds, with breaks from Langdon, Alec Jenkins, Dale Ford and Ceri Young before replacement flanker Gareth Bateman dabbed down with Langdon adding a difficult third conversion from the touchline.
A dangerous tackle by Cardiff lock James Murphy on replacement Ceri Young close to halfway, went un-carded, but yielded promising field position for Neath to once more unleash their driving lineout.

The rumbling Black pack led to space being created in the backs for replacement wing Young to get the bonus-point try, and the outcome suddenly hinged on the difficult conversion, which fly-half Langdon just failed to oblige from wide out, allowing Cardiff to gain a first Gnoll victory in four seasons.

The result was harsh on Neath who were, first ten minutes apart, the far better team on the day, and this will bode well for the two arguably toughest tests of the Season – Llandovery this week at Church Bank, and Pontypridd at home on Saturday 26th October.

This is now a 6:45 pm Kick Off at the request of S4C.

Please get your family and mates to the games – The boys need your backing – They are so close to clicking and YOU could be the ‘16th Person’

Cardiff at the Gnoll

Neath Rugby Supporters ClubAnd, so our run of home games at the start of the season finally comes to an end tomorrow with the visit of Cardiff to the Gnoll. It’s been a tough first couple of weeks for the squad but I’m sure all the fans will get behind them in the search for their first win of the season.

Next week it’s a visit to Llandovery, so Saturday will be your last chance for three weeks to join the supporters club. We’ll be in the clubhouse before and after the game as usual so please come and see us. We’re also taking orders for the exclusive supporters club polo shirts. They are proving very popular with members with many having already been ordered. We’re also hoping to expand our range of merchandise in the near future so keep an eye on our website and Twitter and Facebook pages for more details.

Don’t forget that if you’ve already ordered a polo shirt, they’ll be ready for collection at the game. Likewise, members who have joined but have yet to collect their membership cards and badges can do so at the game.

Thanks to everyone who has supported us so far and best of luck to the team today.

Match Report: Neath 28 – 37 Bedwas

BEDWAS TAKE THE SPOILS, AS NEATH DON’T HELP THEMSELVES
(Match report by Phill Lawrence)

Jack Jones

Jack Jones

A dominant first half, including two tries in two minutes, set Bedwas up for a deserved first win of the season at the Gnoll.

Bedwas got off the mark via the boot of Richard Powell with two penalty goals which saw them six points to nil ahead after 12 minutes.

Dai Langdon kicked a penalty to halve the deficit after 17 minutes. However, the Blacks took the lead midway through the half; a wild Bedwas pass in midfield was intercepted by Neath’s Ospreys young winger, Ashley Evans, who raced through to touchdown by the posts. Langdon added the simple conversion to put the home side 10-6 up.

Bedwas came back with force four minutes later when hooker Richard Wilkes ran through some turnstyle tackling, although at a great angle, and powered through for a try, Powell adding the conversion.

Then came a quite decisive decision two minutes later. Winger Cullen broke down the right and was adjudged to have stayed in the field, although it was obvious that his foot touched the line on more than one occasion, but continued on and ran through for a try, again Powell converted, turning a 10-6 lead into a 10-20 deficit in an instant.

The Bedwas purple patch continued and five minutes later, former Neath Scrum half Luc Jones marked his Bedwas debut with a fine try. Powell missed his conversion on this occasion.

Just before the break, Powell and Langdon exchanged penalties and at half time Bedwas comfortably led 28 points to 13.

From the restart, Dai Langdon took advantage of the advantage to add a smart drop goal before Bedwas lock Phill Rees was sin binned for hands in the ruck, Langdon adding the ensuing third penalty whilst the visitors were reduced to 14, but Bedwas fought back with Powell added another penalty to settle Bedwas nerves – the score now 19-31.

Neath managed to haul themselves back into contention as Full Back Ceri Young broke through some weak tackling for a try which Langdon converted and suddenly Neath were back within five of the visitors at 26-31

But further indiscipline from the home team, and good pressure gained two penalty opportunities, which Powell converted to take his personal tally to 22 points and earn Bedwas a valuable victory and denying Neath a losing bonus point.

There are still positive signs, and in Ashley Evans another speedster is born – and, who knows, without the contentious second try, the story may have been different, but the squad will be hoping to regroup before the visit of a few old boys playing for Cardiff.

While it’s fresh in my head…

Blog originally posted by Dai Langdon on his blog on Saturday evening

dailangdon's avatardailangdon

At the moment I’m probably the most depressed man in the world. We (“we” being Neath rugby) have just come off the back of our third league defeat out of three games so far this season. All at home, two of which being games our opposition had no right in winning.

As any rugby fan in Wales will probably be aware, Neath have always been a top flight team. The Gnoll was once a fortress and opposition teams would arrive with the knowledge that they had no right to be successful. In the past 3 years since I have been a player at the club, we have registered wins over London Welsh, Ulster, and Bristol, along with many other hard fought wins throughout the domestic competitions. As of today, we are currently bottom of the Principality Premiership with a tough few weeks ahead with Cardiff and Llandovery around the corner…

Blacks take on Bedwas

The early season flurry of home matches continues this weekend with the visit of Bedwas. We’re still searching for our first win of the season following last Sunday’s narrow defeat to Swansea. Such is the nature of our defeats so far year, it is surely only a matter of time before we get it right and get our first win – hopefully on Saturday.

It was just a couple of years ago that we put 100 points on Bedwas at the Gnoll. Such has been their improvement in those years, we’ll get nowhere near that score today. In fact, I think most fans would just be happy with a 1 point victory.

Orders are now coming in thick and fast for our exclusive Neath Rugby Supporters Club polo shirts. They are available for just £10 to members. Come and see us in the clubhouse before or after Saturday’s game to order yours. It’s also not too late to join the supporters club either. Again, just come and see us in the club to sign up.

Don’t forget, we’re always looking for ideas for activities and fund-raising events that will raise money for the supporters club. We have some ideas in the pipeline but if you’ve got any suggestions, then please let us know. You can speak to us at home games or e-mail us on info@neathrugbysupporters.com. Don’t forget that this is your club and we need your suggestions and support to make it work. Remember the more successful we are, the more the players will benefit, so please get involved.

Good luck to the team on Saturday and fingers crossed for our first win of the season.

Swansea at the Gnoll

Neath Rugby Supporters ClubFollowing on from last week’s disappointing defeat to Llanelli, it’s Swansea’s turn to make the short trip to the Gnoll this weekend (albeit on the slightly unusual day of Sunday).

The reason of course for the 24 hour delay in kick off is that the game will be shown live on S4C.

Of course having the game covered live on TV is something of a double edged sword.  There’s no doubt that the altered kick off time and the lure of watching the game from the warm comfort of the armchair will put some people off from coming through the turnstiles.  However, on the positive side, live TV coverage will give some well-deserved publicity to our sponsors plus it gives the players the chance to showcase themselves to the nation and a good showing today might just tempt some of those stay at home fans out of their armchairs and back on to the terraces.

Even though the game is on TV, don’t take the easy option of sitting at home with your feet up.  Please make the effort to come to the Gnoll to cheer on and get behind the team.

We’ll be at the clubhouse again before and after tomorrow’s game.  So, if you still haven’t joined, collected your membership card or ordered your polo shirt then please come and do so tomorrow.
