Match Report: Bedwas 19-24 Neath

NEATH DIG IN FOR WIN AS BEDWAS FEEBLY PROTEST
(Match report by Phill Lawrence)

Neath Rugby Supporters ClubOn the 100th Year Anniversay of World War I breaking out, it was appropriate that the men in Black, led forward by Generals Lee ‘Duck’ Evans and Gareth ‘Gravs’ Gravell, put a massive shift in the trenches of Bridge Field, Bedwas, to hold on where lesser sides would have folded – Like the Whites the week before, despite them leading 17-0 at one point.

It wasn’t all blood and guts and last ditch defending however, as Leon Ward and Tom James crossed to give the Gnoll Men a deserved 18-12 HT lead.

James Thomas, back at Fly Half, with his old mucker TJ inside him, gave Neath the lead with an early penalty against the wind on 6 minutes, but the disciplinary problems that have cost Neath points came about again, with the deadly Richard Powell landing penalties on 10, 20 and 24 minutes, for a 3-9 lead to the home side.

Then came a blast from the past, as on 29 minutes a flash back to the Lyn Jones days – A line out 30 metres out to Calum Davies at the back, caught then thrown to Tom James to burst through a gaping hole and nearly making it, before a deft off load to a grateful Leon Ward – the move took supporters back to those early ‘Duncan Dashes’ (Barry Williams to Gareth Llewellyn thrown down to Duncan Jones who scores! Simples!).

James Thomas was unlucky this time, but the weather had started to come in, and a well kicked penalty gave the men in black an 11-9 lead

Virtually straight from the kick off and another lineout thirty metres out – yet another break from Tom James – this time skirting around the back of the line out before straightening and sliding over in sheer delight. JT improved this one to give the Blacks a handy 18-9 lead, before Bedwas hauled in some of the deficit – Another 3 pointer from Dead-Eyed Powell, giving a Half Time Score of Bedwas 12-18 Neath

The Second Half got under way, but was punctuated with a lot of handling errors and frustration on both sides at getting good position, but making errors – knock ons, forward passes – the conditions beginning to deteriorate. James Thomas added another 3 pointer to stretch the lead back to 9 points at 12-21.

Bedwas then showed they could not be counted out, as former Neath back Elliot Jones ran from near his own 5 yard line and created space for Rory Budina – the Blues Academy product evading some weak tackling before dotting down and the ever reliable Powell adding the extras on the hour.

Then came the herculean defensive effort from Neath. With Mike Bermingham already on the sidelines nursing a three week injury to his shoulder, but battled on as long as he could, Roy Jones battled through, along with big Marc Jones, ‘Gezzy’ Gerwyn Price and Sion Crocker. The last ten minutes was a literal battle of the brawn up front but a couple of crucial knock-on’s by the Bridge Field men, allied to an inexplicable not straight put in at the scrum led ultimately to their downfall.

Referee Kelvin Shorte’s interpretation of the scrum was, by now being loudly questioned by the baying home support, and when the scrum went down again the natives begged for a penalty try, but a slip was ruled. Roy Jones stayed down for seemingly endless minutes with what looked a serious shoulder strain . At this point Referee Shorte called for uncontested scrums, as Gerwyn Price had to rejoin the fray – and health and safety dictates that you cannot run competitive scrums with two hookers and only one prop.

The locals were naturally furious as Tom James passed to a grateful James Thomas who walked the ball out of play to end a thriller.

Tempers flared at the end, and accusations of cheating from the home support were batted away with replies of ‘2 injured props – think of their safety’.

It may have been an unsatisfactory end to the game for some, but for the men in Black from the Gnoll, a lifeline in their fight for survival – especially given that Swansea missed a last gasp penalty to snatch a win over Bridgend, instead losing 13-14 – the winning Bridgend score coming from Ashleigh James – Former Neath hooker.

It is no onto back-to-back games against Pontypridd for Neath, this Wednesday and next Tuesday. They will no doubt still be ecstatic over winning their British and Irish Cup Quarter Final over the Cornish Pirates away from home, but let’s hope they have one eye on their SWALEC Cup Semi Final against Aberavon, as they seem to be clear at the top of the Table.

Neath Rugby Supporters Club have made yet another donation to the Neath RFC squad.

Following on from the donations of nutritional supplements and ball boy tabards made earlier in the season, the supporters club have now donated a set of training tops to the playing squad.  The tops were worn by the replacement players during the Neath v Carmarthen fixture last Saturday.

A spokesman for Neath Rugby Supporters Club said “When we started the supporters club last summer we aimed to make one presentation to the squad at the end of the season.  The fact that we have now made three donations by the end of February is a testament to the fantastic response we have received from Neath’s rugby fans.  The generosity of our members has been fantastic in supporting our ventures and it is because of this we have been able to support the boys on the field in a practical way.”

As well as these presentations, the work of Neath Rugby Supporters Club continues with its inaugural Hall of Fame celebration being planned for later in the summer.

The spokesman said “The Hall of Fame is something that has really caught the imagination of supporters, with nominations pouring in.  The celebration evening later in the summer is something that people are really looking forward to and there is a real buzz of anticipation in the air with fans eager to pay tribute  great and the good of Neath RFC.

Get well soon Nicky

Nicky Downs

Nicky Downs

Neath Rugby Supporters Club send their best wishes to Neath prop Nicky Downs.

The popular prop has spent the last couple of days in hospital with a serious leg injury known as Compartment Syndrome.  He has undergone his third operation today, which went well and may be able to go home tomorrow.

Needless to say, we wish Nicky a full and quick recovery and we’ll hopefully see him back in the black jersey next season.

(Thanks to Nicky’s mum, Jackie, for keeping us updated on his progress)

Jack Jones is Supporters Club Man of the Match

Jack Jones MoM

Matthew McCarthy & Neath Rugby Supporters Club members present Jack with his award

Congratulations to Jack Jones who was the recipient of the first Neath Rugby Supporters Club Man of the Match award.

The award came for his display in Neath’s 29-5 win over Cambridge University at the Gnoll on Saturday.  The match acted as a memorial for Neath’s great player and Team Manager Brian Thomas.  It was therefore, perhaps fitting that the winner of the award was Brian’s grandson, Jack, who given his display seems to be following in his grandfather’s footsteps.

Jack was presented with his award in the clubhouse by former Neath outside half Matthew McCarthy.

Neath Rugby Supporters Club are hoping to make the Man of the Match award a regular feature, so look out for more winners in the future.

Neath v Cambridge University

Jack Jones

Jack Jones

So, it was an unlucky defeat last time out against Llandovery, which means we’ve still got plenty of work to do to secure our Premiership survival.  Such are the wonders of this league, there is a three week gap between the Llandovery game and our next assignment at Sardis Road on the 8 February.

Thankfully today’s opponents, Cambridge University, have stepped into the breach and it’s fitting that today’s match acts as a memorial to the great Brian Thomas, who played with distinction for both teams.

To mark the occasion, Neath Rugby Supporters Club will be making a man of the match award towards the end of the game.  Listen out for the announcement and the presentation in the clubhouse.

It was people such as Brian who inspired us to launch our Hall of Fame.  If you haven’t seen our website or articles in the local papers, the Hall of Fame is all about recognising and honouring individuals synonymous with Neath RFC – the legendary figures who have shown exceptional commitment and contribution to the club over the past 143 years.

Starting this year, Neath Rugby Supporters Club will induct three new members into the Hall of Fame. The inductees could be players, coaches, administrators, volunteers or any individual from any era who has shown a remarkable loyalty and commitment to the club.

And we are going to ask you, the supporters, to suggest individuals you would like to see nominated.  With legendary figures such as Rees Stephens, Dai Morris, Brian Williams and of course Brian Thomas amongst many others all featuring for Neath over the years, there’ll be no shortage of individuals from which to choose.

Once the nominations close on Monday 24 March, we’ll ask 3 or 4 supporters club members to get together and whittle that list down to the final 3.  Those three will then be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a special celebratory evening at the end of the season.

You can nominate players you want to see in the Hall of Fame by clicking here. You can also call to see us in the clubhouse on Saturday and pick up one of our nomination forms.
