A Chance Lost – Memories of Grahame Hodgson

Following the sad death of Grahame Hodgson earlier this week, local writer Alan Hughes shares his memories of Neath’s former full-back:

WP_20151107_16_27_31_ProInside ropes please, one for me and one for the boy”. With those words, spoken by my father, I first entered the Gnoll, to begin, like him before me, a lifelong devotion to Neath Rugby Club. In that first game (against Richmond of all people), we took what became our usual place at the Union End, away, my father reasoned, from the more raucous elements among the crowd. Thus, was I inducted.

After that first game I wanted him to take me again, to every game in any weather. I was smitten. He couldn’t get away with saying he was tired after a morning shift, because being an odious little fellow I demanded that we go.

At half-time there were the autographs. Too shy in the early days, I was soon leading the pack towards the half-time huddle, towards the Neath team of course. However famous and illustrious the opponents it was always the Neath signatures I wanted. As the years passed and he became too old and ill to accompany me, I started to go to the away games as well, eventually to every game, anywhere, often on my own, to all parts of the country, wherever the all blacks were playing.

One of my first favourites was Cyril Roberts, that most powerful of wings for Neath and Wales. I still see him in Neath these days, looking fit, healthy and tanned, a testimony to the way he has lived his life. In those days he was a coruscating runner who thrilled the Gnoll crowd with his touchline dashes.

Years passed, chiefly of mediocrity, until one day there came, for me, a seminal moment. It was the arrival of a full back, his name was G.T.R Hodgson of St Lukes College, Exeter and Neath – Grahame Hodgson – and he was the most complete player I had ever seen.

Everything he did was immaculate, even his kit seemed perfect, an unsubstantiated rumour had it that even his bootlaces were ironed.

For years, for me, he was Neath. There was, as ever, a fearsome pack, but it seemed to me then, that whilst he was there, as that last elegant line of defence that everything was going to be all right.

The history and traditions of Neath are known all over the rugby world, the list of achievements endless-first cup winners, first league winners, first treble winners, World Record holders (still) for tries and points in a season, among them. It was in Neath after all, that the Welsh Rugby Union was formed. Essentially blue collar, it has never been a club of glamour, thriving rather on a siege mentality, an esprit de corps which has been their enduring hallmark over the years.

None of this mattered to me then of course, nothing mattered much at all, as long as there was Hodgson at full back. He played fifteen times for Wales (it should have been thirty). He was a thorn in the side of whoever Neath played. Coming from the ground the opposition would bemoan the fact that they made him look good by “Kicking the ball down his throat”. The reason of course, was that with a sense of positioning that was uncanny, he was to be found wherever they kicked the ball. His catching was faultless and his screw kicking perfect (he was later recruited to coach J.P.R Williams in the art).

Years later, when, in rugby terms he was old and I was young I actually played against him.

I have always regretted not telling him on that day what an influence he had been on me, but a combination of shyness and embarrassment meant that I let the moment pass. It didn’t seem to me, in those days, to be the right thing to do.

When I recreate the scenario now, I wish I could have sought him out in a quiet corner, just to say how much I had enjoyed and appreciated his career. As it was he never knew he was my hero, and I lacked the moral fortitude to tell him.

He had spoken to me only once, in the showers after the game, “Hey mate, chuck over the soap”, it was the only pass I ever saw him drop.

Grahame Hodgson

WP_20151107_16_27_31_ProNeath Rugby Supporters Club were today saddened to hear of the death of Grahame Hodgson.

The popular full-back’s career with Neath spanned three decades and is regarded by many as one of the finest players to have pulled on the black jersey, making over 400 appearances.

Grahame Hodgson’s name is never far from discussions when choosing entrants to our Hall of Fame, and undoubtedly will feature again in this year’s deliberations, such is the esteem in which he is held.

An excellent tribute to him by Mike Price can be read on the Neath Rugby website.

It goes without saying, the thoughts of the Neath Rugby Supporters Club are with his friends, family and team mates at this time.

Neath v Ebbw Vale – Programme Notes

002I’m not sure how many neutrals there were at the Gnoll for the Boxing Day Derby, but they would have thoroughly enjoyed an enthralling game of rugby.

Unfortunately for Neath fans, it was a heartbreaking end to a game, where we finally looked like breaking our loosing streak in the league. Still, it was a draw and the way the team played, with pace and confidence means our first win is surely not too far away. Hopefully that victory will come at today’s game.

One of the most encouraging aspects of Boxing Day’s game was the size of the crowd and the atmosphere it generated. It was the biggest Gnoll crowd for many years, and hopefully the performance against Aberavon will entice many of them to become more regular visitors.

We may now be in the second half of the season, but you can still join the supporters club. For the cost of just £10 you can help make a significant contribution to the performance of the squad through the purchase of training kit and equipment. We have made thousands of pounds of contribution to the squad since our inception just over two years ago, and we’ll have another significant investment to announce soon.

Joining the supporters club now will also ensure that you qualify for discounted tickets for our end of season Hall of Fame celebration night. The date will be confirmed soon, along with details of how you can nominate your Neath greats for inclusion in this year’s Hall of Fame.

If you would like to join then please come and see us in the clubhouse before or after every home game.

Boxing Day Derby

004With the ever increasing commercialisation of the game, it’s nice to see some traditions remain, with a Neath v Aberavon Boxing Day derby. These festive (and sometimes feisty) games are part and parcel of the domestic calendar in Wales and long may it continue.

It was good to see the boys register a win at home to Maesteg last weekend. It might only have been a friendly but a win is a win and will surely be a confidence booster ahead of today’s vital game. It was also a chance for new coach Paul Williams to run the rule over his players and today will give them another opportunity to impress.

As far as the supporters club is concerned plans are in the pipeline already for launching the 2016 Hall of Fame early in the new year. We’ll soon be asking you for your nominations for who you think should join the likes of Shane Williams, Gareth Llewellyn and Brian Williams in being inducted to the Hall of Fame, so get your thinking caps on. We’ll also be announcing the date for the celebration night, one of the highlights of the year for many of our fans, so keep an eye out in the programme, our website and social media platforms for further details.

Finally, given the time of year it seems appropriate to thank all our members who have supported us through the year. Your support has been invaluable and helped us to purchase more kit and equipment for the team than we had anticipated.

On a personal level we’d also like to offer our thanks to those who have helped us out on many occasions, not least Rhys and Sarah Davies of R&SD Risk Management for their kind sponsorship of our Hall of Fame night earlier in the year.

We’d also like thank Paula Thomas for her tireless work in selling raffle tickets through the clubhouse and ground at every home game. If you’ve bought a ticket, then the chances are you bought it off Paula, and her efforts have raised a considerable amount of money for the supporters club. (By the way, details on what we’ve bought with that money will be announced soon). So thank you very much Paula for all your help during the year.

So, it just remains for us to with you a Merry Christmas and to wish the boys well for tomorrow’s game. Nadolig Llawen.

Thank You Patrick

Patrick HorganNeath Rugby Supporters Club were disappointed to learn to today that Head Coach Patrick Horgan had left the club.

There can be no doubting Pat’s contribution to Neath RFC over 20 years, first as a player and then as a coach. Particularly impressive were his efforts over the last couple of years in galvanizing the team and securing the club’s premiership status despite all the off-field issues.

His passion for Neath can not be mistaken, epitomised by his inspirational speech at last season’s Hall of Fame evening where he emphasised the importance of everyone sticking together for the betterment of the club.

As a supporters club we would like to place on record our thanks and admiration for everything Pat has done for Neath. He will be missed.

The Poetic Game

At the recent Neath v Pontypridd game, Neath Rugby Supporters Club’s Len Kowalski bumped into local author, long time Neath Rugby supporter and NRSC member Alan Hughes.

Alan is one of many authors among our ranks and was keen to talk about his new book that had just been pre-released – the official release date is April next year (2016) to coincide with the start of the cricket season.  The Poetic Game is, in Alan’s own words “About cricket, an unashamedly nostalgic and idealised view of the loveliest of summer sporting activities”

For those of you who do not know Alan, he has been a published author for the last 15yrs who has lived almost his entire life in Tonna. Alan is also a lifelong supporter of Neath RFC.

He has written about opera, sport and English literature in various media outlets.

His books include ‘A notch closer’, a semi-autobiographical book of short stories released in 2012. Mostly, but not all about rugby, mostly but not all about Neath RFC.  Another book, ‘Tonna, village of artists’, released in 2014 charted the celebrated and accomplished artists with connections to Tonna.

Now, you may ask what this book about cricket has got to do with Neath Rugby and its supporters. Discounting the fact that it is written by a Neath RFC supporter and that the Neath cricket club ground is right next door to the famous Gnoll rugby ground, there are numerous references to Neath RFC within its pages. Also many of our supporters follow the local cricket scene as well as play in local cricket teams during the summer months and will have an interest in the book.

The Poetic Game in paperback form is on sale behind the bar in the clubhouse at only £5. An ideal stocking filler with Christmas almost upon us. There is a hardback copy too which is priced at £7. Alan has said that he would donate £1 from every sale to the Neath Rugby Supporters Club which is a very nice gesture indeed, thank you.

The book, when officially launched next April, will be on sale at various local outlets. So keep your eyes peeled.

Neath v Pontypridd – Programme Notes

Pontypridd A (2)So the search goes on for our first win of the season as we welcome reigning champions Pontypridd to the Gnoll this Saturday (2:30pm).

Firstly, congratulations to Cameron Morris, who was chosen as the Neath Rugby Supporters Club Man of the Match at last week’s game with Bridgend. We’re sure it will be the first of many such awards he picks up. We give a man of the match award at every home game, and if any supporters club member wants the opportunity to choose their man of the match and then present the commemorative plaque at the end of the game, then just let us know.

We mentioned in last week’s column how already this season we have donated over £2000 worth of equipment to the squad, including an array of fitness equipment and drinks bottles. We are in constant dialogue with team management regarding future purchases.

However, those future purchases will only possible with your on-going support. By becoming a member, supporting our initiatives and attending events you can ensure that as much money as possible is raised for the squad – every penny we make is ploughed directly back in to the team.

If you haven’t joined yet and wish to do so then please come and see us. Membership is open to all and costs just £10 for the season. You can sign up by visiting our table in the clubhouse on matchdays. Members will receive a free gift as well as discounted rates to attend our events and functions throughout the season.

Remember, the supporters club belongs to its members. Therefore if any member has any ideas how we can improve the club, what activities or events you’d like to see us stage or suggestions for what to donate to the squad, then please do come and speak to us.

Good luck to the boys, and let’s cheer them on to victory this weekend.
