Just Two Weeks to Go

Hall of FameThere are now just two weeks to go until the inaugural Neath Rugby Supporters Club Hall of Fame celebration evening.

The event promises to be a memorable one as Neath greats Brian Williams, Brian Thomas, Steve Powell, Dai Morris and Shane Williams become the first ever inductees into the Hall of Fame.  The five (or their representatives) will be presented with their special commemorative caps by current members of the Neath RFC squad, thereby strengthening the bond between the present and the past players.

The celebration takes place on Friday 23rd May 2014 at 7:30pm.  Tickets for the evening are still available, they cost £7.50 for supporters club members and £10 for non-members.  They will be available on the night on a first come, first served basis, but to guarantee your ticket call Len on 01639 778164 or e-mail info@neathrugbysupporters.com

All profits raised from the evening will be ploughed back into the Neath RFC playing squad to help with the purchase of kit and equipment for the 2014/15 season.

Neath Rugby Supporters Club are very grateful to Rhys Davies from R&SD Risk Management for their kind sponsorship of the evening.

Hall of Fame Inductees Revealed

Hall of FameSo after all the speculation and guess work it is time to reveal the final five who’ve made it into the Hall of Fame.

In no particular order, they are:

A man who joined us as a young scrum half who went on to become one of the world’s best wingers – Shane Williams.

Next, the man known simply as The Shadow – Dai Morris

The ultimate clubman. People have lost count of the number of games he actually played for Neath. Normally a centre, he played in every position for the club ,except in the front row – Steve Powell.

He was a player, a coach, a manager and a visionary – the one and only Brian Thomas.

No Hall of Fame would be complete without him. Ahead of his time for fitness and work rate for a prop, he was at the heart of our 80s/90s glory days – the great Brian Williams.

So there you have it, our final five. What do you think?

Remember May 23rd is the celebration night, tickets are available by e-mailing info@neathrugbysupporters.com or calling Len on 01639 77816401639 778164.  Come along to pay tribute to these legendary players.

Safe at Last

Lee EvansAnyone got any fingernails left?

We finally did it, we got out of our hole with a hard fought win at Aberavon yesterday.  It was great to see so many Neath fans in the ground, easily outnumbering the Aberavon support.

But the true heroes were on the pitch.  Each player put in a tremendous amount of work.  They weren’t about to let this great club be relegated without a fight.

I won’t single out any player as each one gave everything and it is to their credit that, instead of disappearing into the changing rooms at the end of the game, they came back over to the terrace to thank the fans for their support.

But thank us for what? We did the easy bit. We stood and shouted.  It wasn’t us putting our bodies on the line and getting battered and bruised each week.  That thanks should go to the players, coaches and medical staff.

The players showed the fighting spirit that Neath was once synonymous with.  The grit, determination and never say die attitude shown by the players yesterday and last Tuesday was fantastic.

What this result, and the one against Pontypridd has shown us, is that this squad has a tremendous amount of potential.  If we can hang on to the majority of them over the summer, then I firmly believe that we’ll be back at the right end of the table next year.

One final word for Gareth Gravell.  He announced on Twitter after the game that, after 7 years and 200 games for the club that he would be retiring (again!).  A tremendous leader who led the club through some difficult times.  Whilst they played in different eras, his tough, no-nonsense approach is very reminiscent of the great Brian Williams and Kevin Philips.  There can be no greater complement than to be compared to those two icons.  Thanks for everything Grav.

Venue Confirmed for Hall of Fame Evening

Hall of FameThe venue has been confirmed for Neath Rugby Supporters Club’s Hall of Fame celebration evening.

The evening will take place on Friday 23rd May at Neath Cricket Club.

Naturally our first choice venue was the Neath Rugby Clubhouse, but despite our best efforts, we were unfortunately not able to secure the venue due to a prior booking on our preferred date.

By using the cricket club, we are at least able to keep the celebrations on the Gnoll, albeit on the other side of the ground.

Further information about the evening will be announced soon, including prices and details about the guest speaker.
