Nelly Named as Head Coach

Following yesterday’s news that Patrick Horgan had stepped down as Head Coach, the club today announced that his replacement would be Neil (Nelly) Edwards.

Well known to Neath supporters, Nelly has been the club’s assistant coach during the last season, helping to guide the team to the SWALEC Cup final.  Before that he coached Ebbw Vale to the Division 1 title.

He of course also played for Neath, where he was a hard no nonsense forward and one of the very best line out jumpers in the league.

A fans’ favourite as a player, he appointment as Head Coach should also be a popular decision amongst supporters.

Diolch Pat

Pat HorganNeath Rugby announced today that Head Coach Patrick Horgan has left the club.

A tremendous servant to the club, Horgan has been at Neath as a player or coach for 17 years (apart from a couple of spells at Llanelli and Ebbw Vale).

Although normally a scrum half, I was reminded today of a season he played for us in 2000/01 at outside half.  Due to injury and loss of form our other No 10s, Pat was pressed into emergency duty at fly half and despite carrying a knee injury throughout the season he did a magnificent job, culminating in an appearance in the Welsh Cup Final against Newport.

The same grit and never say die attitude he displayed as a player was also to the fore as a coach, especially during our problems over the last few years.

This season has seen Pat having to trawl the local clubs on an almost weekly basis to secure enough permit players to enable us to put a team out on a Saturday.  His eye for spotting young players has seen the club unearth some real talents, such as Steffan Jones.

So, good luck Pat and thanks for everything you’ve done for Neath RFC

So near, yet so far

Well, it wasn’t to be.  Despite the best efforts of the team, we didn’t quite have enough to beat Pontypridd in the SWALEC Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium.

The players gave it their all and competed well for the first hour, before Pontypridd pulled away in the last quarter.  The try right on the final whistle probably gave the scoreline a bit of an unfair gloss but Pontypridd deserved their victory.

The highlight for Neath supporters was a superb try from young wing Dafydd Howells, who showed great pace and confidence in rounding the Pontypridd full back for the score.  That’s the reason he’s been selected for the Wales squad.

It’s been a tough season but the players, coaches, management and the medical team have shown great pride and effort in getting through it.  They all deserve their break before getting back together for pre-season and a great 2013/14.
